Gunn Volunteers Deliver 6,500 Christmas Gifts to Boysville

The smiles started the moment the first gifts arrived. Gunn volunteers donated more than 6,500 Christmas presents to children at Boysville, an emergency and foster care shelter that provides boys and girls with a safe place to stay when life has been difficult. Each gift carried a simple message. You are seen. You are valued. You are loved. For many of these children, the holidays can be a complicated time. Some arrive with only a few belongings. Some are separated from siblings or adjusting to a new home. A wrapped present is more than a toy or a sweater. It is comfort. It is a reminder that a caring community stands with them.

Boysville’s Heart for Children

From its earliest days, Boysville has focused on safety, stability, and hope. Boys who came from broken homes and abusive situations were given a caring home and a chance at an education.

  • In 1953, the home moved to a rural setting to support up to 78 boys in a farm-like environment. The boys raised animals, did chores, and went to school. Those daily responsibilities helped them grow into confident young adults.
  • In 1983, Boysville moved to its current campus on 78 pastoral acres on Loop 1604 near Judson High School. This allowed the home to expand care to 96 boys.

Boysville has always adapted to meet the needs of children and families

  • In 1986, to keep siblings together, the program began accepting girls.
  • In 1995, an emergency shelter opened to place boys and girls coming from crisis situations. Capacity grew to 124 children.
  • In 2004, Boysville welcomed its first infants to keep a sibling group of five together. Today, Boysville serves children of all ages, from birth through college or vocational school.

The mission remains clear. Helping boys and girls become responsible adults. Boysville also holds a unique commitment. No child is turned away for lack of financial resources.

Care From Cradle to College

A key part of this mission is the Supervised Independent Living Program. As teens transition from high school to adulthood, Boysville provides housing, clothing, food, living allowances, and case management services. Through the Boysville Foundation, young adults receive scholarships that help cover education costs. The goal is steady and compassionate support at every step.

The Spirit of Giving

The 6,500 Christmas gifts from Gunn volunteers helped make the season bright for children who deserve joy. New pajamas meant warmth on a cool night. Books opened doors to new worlds. Games brought laughter to living rooms and common spaces. Most of all, the gifts said that the community believes in every child’s future. Boysville has served San Antonio for 81 years and continues to fight the cycle of abuse and neglect while preparing children for success. Moments like this gift drive move that work forward.
