SAN ANTONIO – July, 28, 2025 – A devastating flood swept through the Texas Hill Country early Friday, July 4, 2025, as campers and families prepared to celebrate Independence Day. Within just 45 minutes, the slow-moving Guadalupe River surged by 26 feet, fueled by relentless torrential rain, transforming the beloved river into a deadly current of destruction.

More than 20 inches of rain fell across Kerrville, Hunt, Ingram, Comfort, and Center Point, creating one of the most catastrophic floods in Central Texas history. National and international headlines soon reported the heartbreaking toll: 138 lives lost, including 27 children and youth counselors attending Camp Mystic.

By 8 p.m. that same day, executives at Gunn Auto Group in San Antonio had already mobilized relief efforts. Partnering with Cox Media Group radio stations — Y-100, 99.5 KISS, KONO 101.1, The Eagle 106.7, and HITS 105.3 — Gunn launched a citywide hygiene item drive called Help the Hill Country, which kicked off Monday, July 7.

Overnight, collection bins were placed at all San Antonio and Seguin-area Gunn dealerships, including Gunn Acura, Gunn Buick/GMC, Gunn Chevrolet, Gunn Honda, Gunn Nissan, and Gunn Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Seguin. Gunn Gives volunteers spent hours at each location, thanking donors and sorting each item so that these essential basics could be distributed immediately upon delivery.

By the end of the week, the campaign had collected more than 22,000 pounds of supplies, equivalent to an estimated 88,000 individual hygiene items, including toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and baby wipes. Special requests by First Responders were also met with electrolyte powder for water bottles, new socks, work gloves, chainsaw oil, mosquito repellent, and high SPF sunscreen. One donor brought a box of 75 new axes for skilled volunteers.

The donated items were delivered in three separate trips to four Hill Country locations directly supporting displaced families and flood victims:

• Misión Bautista Hispana de Comfort in Comfort, Texas
• Center Point Methodist Church in Center Point, Texas
• Christian Assistance Ministries (CAM) in Kerrville, Texas
• Hill Country Daily Bread in Boerne, Texas
